About

SalDAWG is comprised of scientists, managers, web programmers, database developers, and others working at the intersection of primary research and natural resources management, and its resulting data and data systems. Members hail from the U.S. and Canada, from Alaska to California. The group was formed to guide the development of three projects working to deepen fisheries agency capacity for data management and in so doing, enhance collaboration among practitioners across North America and provide a foundation for increased data interoperability across borders.

Hosting the 2009 meeting in Portland and coincident with a larger research conference affords us with the unique chance to explore an array of relevant topics and meet a cadre of forward-thinking specialists working at the advanced edge of research science, communication, information management, and computer science.

State of the Salmon Program at Ecotrust

Established in 2003 as a joint effort of Wild Salmon Center and Ecotrust, State of the Salmon is the only non-governmental program dedicated to evaluating and conserving wild Pacific salmon across their entire range — from headwaters to the open ocean, across seven Pacific Rim nations.

Our collaborative work began with the completion of the first range-wide, map-based assessment for this majestic group of species. Today, we continue to synthesize data and facilitate dialogue in support of sound salmon management and conservation at ever finer geographic scales. A comprehensive set of goals and principles underlies the key initiatives through which we strive to ensure that wild salmon populations thrive long into the future.

If you registered for the Coast Field Trip on Friday November 6th after next week’s CERF conference.  Just a few items to help you (and us) plan a bit ahead:

·

  • As A sack lunch will be provided, please let me know if you have any dietary restrictions.
  • If you are coming from Portland (as opposed to Corvallis), we will meet at the parking lot behind the Ecotrust building in Portland’s Pearl District.  This is on the opposite side of the river from the convention center, and a few blocks north of downtown.  If you will arrive by car, you can park at the SmartPark indicated on the following map.  The Portland streetcar also runs between downtown and the Ecotrust building on 9th Avenue SW.

  • Please meet us at 8:00 AM so we can get on the road by 8:15 or so.
  • We should return to Portland by 5:00 after visiting a smolt trip site on the Nehalem River (and with a little luck get a glimpse of adult fish sampling), and a second stop at a flood plain restoration project recently constructed on the Necanicum River.
  • Please remember to bring raingear as we will spend some time walking around outdoors, and of course, it’s the Pacific Northwest in November!

If you have any questions, you can call my cell phone at: (360) 918.4352.

We look forward to seeing you next week!

Thank you kindly,

Sarah
